Editorial Reviews
From School Library Journal
Review
“In [There Was an Old Mummy Who Swallowed a Spider], a bulgy-eyed mummy rises from its sarcophagus and proceeds to swallow a string of objects, animals, and people, including a spider, crow, bone, and witch. In increasingly frenetic cartoons, [Steve] Gray stages the debacle on the grounds of a quintessential haunted house, precariously perched in a tree over a graveyard. Full-spread scenes of the mummy chasing his victims alternate with glimpses of what’s going on in his belly―the swallowed creatures appear to be having a reasonably good time, simmering green witch’s brew over a campfire―which should make for some enjoyably silly Halloween reading.” ―Publishers Weekly
“Ward and Gray exchange the little old lady for an old mummy, and the book gets pleasantly goofy from there...For preschoolers who want a Halloween book that is more silly than scary.” ―Kirkus Reviews
“Cartoonish digital illustrations use lots of wide, fearful eyes and luminous backgrounds to make the graveyard and haunted-castle settings glow with Halloween anticipation.” ―Horn Book Magazine

- Reviewed in the United States on February 15, 2019I haven't read it yet to my nieces and nephews, but I've read it myself and found it quite fun. I love the pics, so colorful and so many fun things to discover on each page. The story is cute and senseless, just like the Old Woman Who Swallowed a Fly, but that's what makes it fun! Also helps inspire kids' imagination as you ask them to try to come up with reasons why each item was swallowed. I can remember as a kid my brother and I would go through the Old Woman Who Swallowed a Fly and come up with different reasons while waiting for the bus, giggling as we got crazier and crazier.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2023My kiddos have really enjoyed this book. The illustrations are wonderful. Cute and fun for the kids
- Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2015I purchased this book, for my niece. I planned on making somewhat of a pre-Halloween day, and thought this would be a fun book to read to her, before we made mummy crafts. I don't think a book has ever been able to hold her attention long enough, to finish it, so when she wanted to read this book again and again, I was pleasantly surprised!
The story isn't scary, but at the same time, does have a spooky theme. I like that the lines rhyme, and that while the story isn't complicated, it's still fun enough to not be boring. Very cute.

' There Was an Old Woman Who Swallowed a Fly'
It makes my son light up and has become a new favorite!!! It's fabulous!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2019My 3 1/2 year old granddaughter got the bog kick out of this book. She even got the hang of the last couple of sentences. A cute take off of the old song "There was an Old Woman who Shallowed a Fly".
- Reviewed in the United States on November 4, 2018Nice rhyming words and funny illustrations. Felt like it was a little long for a grade schooler though. No throwing up at the end like the old-lady-swallowing-fly-story!
